History of Tocqueville Society

When Alexis de Tocqueville visited America in 1831 he observed that Americans hold a unique willingness to work for the common good and a tendency to lend faithful support to neighbors and countrymen, especially in times of need. His observations, readings, and discussions formed the basis of Democracy in America, a study of American society and politics. It is in this spirit that United Way of America created the Tocqueville Society, one of the most prestigious institutions for individuals who are passionate about strengthening lives and helping people, and pursue that passion through action. The Tocqueville Society brings together local individuals who believe United Way is the premier way to build a stronger, healthier community for us all.
